Audio Description
Audio description provides narration of all visual elements of filmed material - stage, set, characters, action sequences, costumes, facial expression, body language and scenery during the silent moments. This enables viewers with sight problems to watch programmes independently.
As well as clear and expressive voices, audio describers need a thorough
knowledge of the needs of a visually impaired audience. They will describe
what can be seen, will never offer a personal version of what is there,
and will never talk over dialogue or commentary. Our experienced audio
describers will create vivid, lasting descriptions to make your product
truly accessible to everyone.
Some programmes are not suitable for audio description as there is not
much to describe visually and may have continuous dialogue. Examples could
be quiz programmes, game shows or news programmes. Atlas Translations
will be able to advise you on the suitability of our audio description
service for the proposed material.
Case Study
London-based Atlas Translations was commissioned to provide an audio description
service in French, German, Spanish, Italian and English of a corporate training
video. Our experienced audio describers, each a native speaker of the
relevant language, supplied clear descriptions of what could be seen on the
film, taking care not to interrupt or speak over any dialogue. The partially-sighted
participants of the language sessions praised our audio describers for their
obvious knowledge of the needs of the audience.
