Atlas Newsletter – March 2007
Atlas and the Environment
In this month’s Newsletter Atlas would like to focus on its environmental policy, since it recognises that the impact of business on the local, regional and global environment is now, more than ever, an issue of key importance.

Atlas is strongly committed to continuous improvements in environmental performance, and keenly promotes employee involvement in environmental matters at all levels. The company operates an Environmental Management System, reviewing the environmental impact of its operations on an annual basis and adopting all recommendations made.
Recycling Rubbish
A core part of Atlas’s corporate environmental strategy is sustainable waste management. The company recognises its responsibilities to recycle materials wherever possible and, before disposing of anything, endeavours to have the item refurbished or repaired for re-sale or donation to charity, dismantled for parts or its components recycled.

Atlas recycles all non-confidential paper waste, cartridges for printers and fax machines, all old PCs, monitors and other computer equipment, and collects postage stamps for delivery to charities.
During 2006, Atlas’s efforts to recycle printer cartridges and mobile phones raised money for the charity ActionAid, helping to reduce local waste and contributing in the fight to eliminate global poverty.
Responsible Waste Management
Atlas also has also adopted the waste management solution offered by Cory Environmental, a company which manages over 3 million tonnes of waste and recyclables per year on behalf of some of biggest and best known companies in UK.
Cory Environmental offers Atlas the possibility of both reducing its waste output and also converting much of it into recycling. Atlas opted for this solution since it provides a highly efficient and cost effective means of reducing the environmental impact of its operations. Not only has Atlas seen its levels of recycling increase dramatically, but landfill costs have also been reduced. This means Atlas gains added value for money, which it is then able to pass onto its own clients.
Additionally, Cory Environmental provides a complete package, assisting Atlas with corporate responsibility reporting and offering services focus on compliance, education and training, translation of new legislative requirements and provision of secure, compliant end markets for ‘difficult’ waste.
Counteracting Carbon Emissions

Atlas has recently changed server to Rackspace –the UK’s first ever managed hosting company to offer carbon neutral web hosting. Rackspace works in partnership with leading tree planting charity, the International Tree Foundation, to provide a solution which offsets the carbon emissions produced by its web hosting services through planting trees, thus reducing the negative impact of its services on the environment.
Atlas to appear at London Book Fair

Atlas will be welcoming visitors to its stand at the London Book Fair, taking place at Earls Court, Central London on 16th -18th April 2007. The London Book Fair is the world’s leading spring publishing event, and provides both visitors and exhibitors with the ideal forum to meet and establish new contacts in the publishing industry. Atlas already provides services to various clients in the publishing industry, including publishing houses, typesetters, printing companies and graphic designers, and is currently set to expand in this area. The company will be exhibiting at stand Q911, where its friendly, expert staff will be on hand to meet visitors and new clients to discuss the wide range of services on offer.
Website Relaunch Update
The Atlas website has recently undergone a major redesign and restructure, making it more accessible and user-friendly than ever. The site’s content has been re-edited to provide users with even more, up-to-date information on the company and its services, and a fresh look and clear navigation facilities now mean that users are now able to access all the information they need in the simple click of a mouse.
Atlas remains committed to providing easily accessible services to all of its clients and this was a key consideration when designing the website, which adheres to guidelines issued by the Royal National Institute for the Blind’s and the Bobby Web accessibility tool. Additionally, it has been speech-enabled, to improve access for people who experience difficulty when reading web pages.
It is hoped that the relaunched site will bring Atlas closer to both its clients and suppliers and take the company into its next phase of development.
“We aim to ensure that the site is constantly changing and growing, giving our clients and suppliers added value,” says Melissa Ridley, Atlas’ Internet Director.
