Proofreading

Proofreading is the task of comparing a final text with the original text, and ensuring that there are no spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, misunderstandings, omissions or ambiguities. A proofreader will also consider the style and vocabulary of the translation, and may make constructive suggestions to improve the syntax and clarity of the text. The proofreading process will also include the verification of tables, figures, numbers, names, abbreviations, spacing, punctuation, metric conversions etc.

For language proofreading we compare a translation with the original text, and carry out the same tasks.

If your translation is for internal use only, you may decide that a proofreading stage is not essential. We do very strongly recommend proofreading for all translations destined for publication, just as you would expect with any material produced in English

Our proofreading is usually completed using the “track changes” function by independent native speakers, who are specialists in particular subject areas.

Case Study 1
Atlas Translations was approached by a publishing company to translate, proofread and typeset eight cookery books from English into French, German, Italian and Spanish.  It was important that our translators and proofreaders had expert knowledge of food, recipes and cooking techniques as some of the recipes had to be adapted for different countries.  The proofreaders and translators worked closely together to ensure accurate and error free versions.  The translated, proofread and typeset cookery books are now for sale in major supermarkets both in the UK and abroad.

Case Study 2
Over the last year, London-based Atlas Translations is proud to have won 13 public and private sector tenders.  Each of these contracts has required us to demonstrate our excellent proofreading skills.
