European Day of Languages
Project manager Gabi Hojnosova has visited Prae Wood Primary School in St Albans on 26th of September to celebrate and promote European Day of Languages, which has been proclaimed in 2001 by the Council of Europe to encourage language learning across Europe. The aim of the event is to promote importance of learning languages and improve intercultural understanding and cultural diversity. On the occasion of the day, a range of events are organised across Europe and Atlas happily contributed.
Gabi, a Slovak native speaker visited Year 5 and 6 in the Prae Wood School and prepared few activities to teach the children a little bit of Slovakian language. Here is what Gabi said about the visit: “I have enjoyed fantastic afternoon in Prae Wood, especially leaching Slovak basics such as greeting people in Slovakia or introducing themselves to others. I have also prepared a language quiz and noticed that children had a great knowledge of many languages, which impressed me a lot. However, a highlight of the lecture was a moment when one of the students asked me how to translate a sentence – ‘Please can I have a marinated beef salad’. In case that the children visit Slovakia, I am sure that they won’t get lost or be hungry J. Thank you very much for having me and for the lovely card that I have received from Year 6!”
